This is now the largest IKEA store in the Southern Hemisphere, and one of the top 20 IKEA stores in the world. The project also involved the adaptive re-use of the existing heritage listed building on the site to provide offices for IKEA Australia.
As the building sits partly above the old Tempe tip, construction methods were incorporated into the design that allowed for the on-site contamination and continuing methane gas emissions associated with the decaying tip material.
The roof form is driven by the height constrictions on the flight paths associated with the site’s location adjacent to Sydney’s Kingsford Smith International Airport, and sheeted with a membrane roof – the first of its kind in Australia.
