This new house in the inner city of Sydney has a strong focus on sustainability and re-use. The external envelope of the building is formed by a retained 1880’s brick stable building that forms the walls, with a new contemporary residence built within the external masonry skin.
The thermal mass of the bulky masonry is used to passively cool the space while forming a visual historic fabric to selected internal and external spaces. The carbon reduction of re-using the structure that was already there, is a measurable and specific sustainability achievement for the project over building with all new walls. This feature architectural residence was the 2022 winner of the highly regarded Wilkinson Award for residential architecture.
Structural engineering is showcased with the lightweight butterfly shaped lightweight roof and the fully developed plan for the project is to repeat the process with a second dwelling on the site to adjoin to the original workers cottage at the street frontage.
